ECONOMIC STATISTICS--NOVEMBER, 2001:

                                        PERSONAL COMPUTER INDUSTRY DATA

  •         A study  which will be released by SALOMON SMITH BARNEY CO. on January 7, 2002 will show that consumers in the United States increased their purchases of personal computers during this current holiday buying season, following rather weak demand for them earlier in the year. The report will show a doubling of such purchases during Thanksgiving week, compared to that week last year. However, SALOMON also said that corporations, as opposed to private consumers, continued to restrict their purchases of PC  equipment, and overall, sales by PC makers were lower than they were last year, which was an excellent year for such sales.  (SOURCE:  Article, "Compaq to Post Profit And Beat Estimates" by Chris Gaither, Technology feature, Business Day section, New York Times, Tuesday, January 8, 2002, page C4  L).
