ECONOMIC STATISTICS--JANUARY, 2001

  • AMERICAN ECONOMIC STATISTICS:    The Conference Board reported this month that American consumers' confidence in the nation's economic health had dropped by the greatest one-month amount since 1991. This report comes as the nation's Federal Reserve system is opening its regular two-day meeting to set the prevailing interest rates for the country. Americans are, however, somewhat sanguine about current business and job conditions; it is conditions in the coming half year that have them worried. Concerns about the near future are now at their greatest level since 1993.  (SOURCE:  Feature, BUSINESS Digest, New York Times, Business Day Section, Wednesday, January 31, 2001, pg. L  C1).
