JANUARY: On January 10 of this year in the United States of America five men, led by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler, establish the Standard Oil Company as a joint stock company. The name is chosen to indicate a "standard quality of product" on which the consumer can depend. At this time, kerosene of widely varying quality is being sold. AUGUST: On August 20 of this year the Brooklyn Daily Eagle paper carried a report which said that "a vicious bull" had broken into the pasturage belonging to Ira Kellums in Babylon, Long Island, and that Mr. Kellums' son had been seriously, but not fatally gored in trying to drive the animal off his father's property. The report also noted that the bull belonged to Elbert Carll, and that Mr. Carll had taken up "a bludgeon" to fight the animal upon hearing of the disturbance, but that he was forced to pull back after much scuffling and "rough usage" and a serious threat to his life, but that his wounds were also not fatal. One of the results of this suspension is that a final decision on Pope Pius IX's plan to create an official Cannon of the Church's laws and regulations is indefinitely postponed.
