  •  JANUARY:    On January 10 of this year in the United States of America five men, led by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler, establish the Standard Oil Company as a joint stock company. The name is chosen to indicate a "standard quality of product" on which the consumer can depend. At this time, kerosene of widely varying quality is being sold.  (SOURCE:  The Prize-Daniel Yergin ((paperback)), pg. 40).

  •  AUGUST:    On August 20 of this year the Brooklyn Daily Eagle paper carried a report which said that "a vicious bull" had broken into the pasturage belonging to Ira Kellums in Babylon, Long Island, and that Mr. Kellums' son had been seriously, but not fatally gored in trying to drive the animal off his father's property. The report also noted that the bull belonged to Elbert Carll, and that Mr. Carll had taken up "a bludgeon" to fight the animal upon hearing of the disturbance, but that he was forced to pull back after much scuffling and "rough usage" and a serious threat to his life, but that his wounds were also not fatal.  (Source: Report in Brooklyn Daily Eagle on 8/20/1870, quoted by Sandi Brewster-walker in her article, "The FIRST MONTHS OF THE TOWN OF BABYLON" in the Beacon Newspaper, March 31, 2022, pp.5-6).

  •  OCTOBER:    On October 20 of this year in Rome, the Vatican Council of the world's major Catholic prelates is suspended because of the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War.   •  (NO SPECIFIC DATE):    At some time during this year the new St. John's College is dedicated in Brooklyn, New York by Bishop John D. Loughlin, who is the first Roman Catholic Bishop of the then free-standing City of Brooklyn in New York State. At this time the "Brooklyn" Diocese's  territory includes  all of Long Island, New York.
