HISTORICAL DATA-1827:

  •  JANUARY

  •  FEBRUARY:    At  about this time ("Early in the year 1827") John strickland, an architect and student of Benjamin Latrobe, living in Philiadelphia, begins design work on what will be the first church building in Pottsville, Pennsylvania: Saint Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church. Strickland has built a reputation for interpreting classical designs in his own works. He now designs St. Luke's in the pure Gothic style, as a small stone structure which measures just 45 feet by 35 feet, and which could be considered a mere chapel by some people. The steeple of his creation will carry the first church bell to ring out in Pottsville, which is already a small but growing community.  (SOURCE:  "The Organs  and History of Trinity Church Pottsville, Pennsylvania Part I: The Earliest Notes" page, at Trinity Episcopal, Pottsville, PA website:  http://www.trinityepiscopalpottsvillepa.org/historyofchurchorgan/theearliestnotes.html  accessed 6/28/2014--GD).
