HISTORICAL DATA-1822:

  •  JANUARY:    On January 7 of this year a group of Roman Catholics from the city of Brooklyn, New York meet at the home of William Purcell at York and Gold Streets and appoint a committee of five men to cross the East River to ask Bishop John Connolly of the Diocese of NewYork (of which Brooklyn is a part) for his advice and consent for the organization of a separate parish on their side of the river. In the advertisement which called for this meting at Purcell's house, it was said that the petitioners first of all wanted their children to be instructed in the principles of the Church (which apparently wasn't happening on a large scale in Brooklyn at this time), and that they found it very inconvenient to make the trip to New York for their religious needs on a regular basis. In sum, they wanted "a church, a pastor, and a place for interment." A certain Daniel Dempsey was among those seking a new parish in Brooklyn at this time.  (SOURCE:  "Diocese of  Brooklyn" page at New Advent website:  http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02798d.htm  accessed 8/13/2016-GD).
