JUNE: On June 21of this year the state of New Hampshire's ratifying convention for the proposed new constitution for the United States of America votes its approval of the document by a vote of 57 to 47-a fairly close vote. New Hampshire is now the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, and the document thereby meets the requirement to become legally operative. JUNE: As of June 26 of this year, as word begins to reach New York State that the state of Virginia has also ratified the proposed new Constitution for the United States of America, opposition here to ratification begins to weaken. Around June 30 of this year a handful of great landowning families control and dominate politics in New York State. A second "power bloc" is a small group of mercantile families. However, these leading families of the state are divided into shifting rival factions. In general, New York City favors the ratification of the proposed new Constitution for the United States of America, but the rural interests in the northern, "upstate" areas, are against it. JULY: On July 26th of this year New York State ratifies the proposed Constitution of the United States of America. Ratification in New York is finally achieved by a promise from the pro-ratification bloc to support a call for a second national convention to consider amendments to the new document. The proposed Constitution is passed by the narrow margin of 30 votes to 27, and that clears the way for the new government to begin the process of governing the thirteen former British colonies in North America. (NO SPECIFIC DATE): At some time during this year the Antifederalists, well-organized and competently led in New York State, win 46 of the 65 seats available at the convention called to ratify the proposed Constitution for the United States of America. The Antifederalists are those who are opposed to ratification. Fortunately, the Federalists have one great asset in the growing tide of events in the rest of the country at this time, and another in the person of Alexander Hamilton. At this time also New York State is the third largest in the United States of America, with a population which is rapidly approaching 340,000. Last year it sided with the smaller states at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (SOURCE: The American Nation...to 1877-Volume I, Second Edition, John A.
