JANUARY: At this time Boston in Massachusetts is almost an island, being attached to the mainland by a flimsy mile-long neck of mud flats. Storms and high tides can rush over this weak isthmus and for a few hours make Boston an actual island. The promontory is made up of rough, steep hills: three large ones and a number of smaller ones. The valleys are covered by a jumble of roofs. At this time the port of Boston looks much like any thriving North European port, except that its buildings are built almost entirely of wood. The channel leading into Boston's inner harbor is so narrow that no ship can enter without-acording to Esther Forbes-brushing against the brass cannon of Castle Island. Governor's Island flanks the harbor on the right. Following them is Bird Island, where gulls and terns nest. Then, at last, one enters the greatest port in all of America--prosperous Boston.(SOURCE: Paul Revere and the World He Lived In, by Esther Forbes, ((paperback)), pages 3-4).

Also at this time, on an island in the Bay of Boston in Massachusetts colony in North America, masons are building the first lighthouse to be set up in the western world, and on Niox's Mate island iron cages have been built to hold the bird-pecked skeletons of pirates.
